Sheffield – The rise of new media in local and community affairs

4 April 2024 , categories: Meetings, News Media, Sheffield

Join us to discuss the rising importance of new media to engage in local and community affairs and how it affects our social bonds.

You are warmly invited to join us at The Red Lion, 109 Charles St, Sheffield, S1 2ND, for our next meeting on Thursday 4th April 2023 at 7:00-9:00pm. See here for location.

As new media increasingly becomes a significant means to engage in local and community affairs and as the traditional methods appear to wither, what are the potentials that can be brought with this new social bond? What pitfalls and advantages can we recognise already?

We will be discussing what we might want or expect from the new manifestations of local media, from local democracy reporting of bigger institutions down to the individual citizen YouTuber; what there exists in between and how it serves us in this moment.

This will be an open discussion and a chance to learn from each other how new media can both enhance social cohesion and also divide communities. We hope that with this better understanding we can all take more informed actions and better help to strengthen our own local communities.

We are growing!

We are expanding our activities via regional Politics in Pubs groups and have created a map where you can search for a group near you. If you live near Salisbury or Northampton we have members who wants to start new groups in those towns, so please let us know if this of interest.

Don’t worry if you can’t find anything nearby as you canĀ start your own group. If you would like to be put in touch with other people interested in talking about politics, please reply to this email letting us know your location and we’ll help to get the conversation started.

We have also started to grow our network with other free speech groups who have a similar interest in open discussion and debate. If you have such a group and want to appear on our map please get in touch.
