Manchester – The Great Enshittification: How Everything Got Worse and Who’s to Blame
Have you ever felt like the things you buy and the services you use are just… getting worse? That you’re paying more and getting less, and companies seem to actively dislike you? Like the world is slowly being stripped down and sold back to us in pieces?
This feeling now has a name: enshittification.
It’s a term coined by author and activist Cory Doctorow to describe the inevitable process by which platforms, products, and services decay over time. It’s not an accident, it’s a deliberate strategy. And it’s affecting all of us.
At this meeting Richard Lewis wants to answer two questions: What exactly is enshittification, and how is it ruining our lives?
Richard is an experienced digital designer and web developer who has been in the digital industry for over a decade. He has been an avid follower of technology and its mechanisms, particularly gaming, which has been a hobby since childhood. Richard has an interest to better understand something if it helps better him and his family’s lives.
Richard’s previous talk was on Technology and whether it was reducing humanity’s autonomy. Since then he has dived into learning more, particularly about Enshitification, something of which he believes people have little understanding of.
