Newcastle – Rubber Meanings: a definition-stretch too far?
What is ‘definition-stretching’ and how does it work? Newcastle Politics in Pubs member Phil Miles will introduce his new book Rubber Meanings, asking how we should respond to the ubiquitous use of terms such as racism, hate and misogyny in today’s public discourse.
Have you ever been accused of ‘racism’ or ‘hate’ or ‘misogyny’… but it just didn’t ring true?
Ever seen something described as ‘far right’ and thought: that doesn’t sound far right to me?
Ever witnessed destructive, violent or otherwise disturbing behaviour on your city streets… only to see it excused as mere ‘protest’?
If you have, you are not alone.
The propaganda trick of ‘definition-broadening’ is used by activists and biased journalists alike, both to smear their political opponents and to whitewash bad behaviour on their own side. But what exactly is it? How does it work? Is it contributing to an ever more polarising and deranged public discourse? If so, how can we expose it?
Come along, join us for a pint (or two), a soft drink or coffee, hear the arguments and have your say! Everyone welcome.
Come and join the discussion
